Israeli PM tweets prior to deal being reached

This tweet from the Prime Minister of Israel on November 20, 2013, is in response to ongoing negotiations concerning Iran's nuclear program. These messages were tweeted prior to a deal being made on November 24. Clearly, the PM is letting the public know that the overall Israeli position is that there should be absolutely no nuclear program within Iran. The chance of Iran having the capabilities to produce nuclear weapons is a massive threat to Israel. This viewpoint is understandable considering the closeness of Iran to Israel and also it's rocky relations. What I find most interesting about these tweets after the fact, is that the last one says "this must be a genuine solution." Knowing that a deal has recently been made, it's interesting because the deal is simply just a temporary solution, more of a first step rather than an end-all response. It's as if the PM knew that the deal that would be agreed upon would not be a genuine, final solution but rather one that eases present tensions.

  1. I really like the idea that you used a tweet from the Prime Minister of Israel. We have discussed in class how different ways of spreading ideas and things have been used and the influence of the media but to actually see a tweet from a Prime Minister really gives me a different perspective. Also, I think it is important to get the point of view of the countries that are closest to Iran and their nuclear program. My post focused more on Iran and the United States point of view of Iran's nuclear program and the history surrounding it, However, your post lets everyone understand how a country that could be directly impacted and has conflict with Iran feels about the possibility of Iran having a nuclear program. Also, the idea that social media is being used a a means to spread information and possibly gain support from the community is very interesting to me.

  2. I agree, the idea to use a tweet is interesting. The Prime Minister is certainly making it clear that he and many other Israelis don't want Iran to continue a nuclear program in any fashion, whether it be for weapons or energy purposes. I think the tweets sum up the overall feelings of most Israeli and other Western politicians when it comes to Iran's nuclear program. This whole issue is something that pops up every now and then in the major media sources, but I think everyone needs to remember that it has been an issue for years and for the politicians it is always one of the major issues for them.

  3. I am really glad that social media made its way into our blog. It really made me think about the role social media plays in society. It was not too long ago that social media was an outlet for simply speaking one's mind, or informing others of what you were doing. Now, social media has a far greater purpose; it can now be used as a news source. Often times these political leaders tweet and it gives them the ability to reach the masses far more easily. It makes average people and politicians far more accessible to each other. Sometimes a press conference or interview are not always possible, however twitter is always available. After reading these tweets I also got the impression that the PM thought an agreement would only be a temporary easing of tensions. The issue of Iran having any type of nuclear program has long been viewed as a threat to Israel and in turn the United States. Any small-step agreements will hopefully open up the possibility for much more "satisfying" solutions.
